Next Saturday (Feb 25th) I will be hosting my own night,'CANDYLAND' at 31 Thomas Street,Limerick.

I will be performing and Djing on the night and will be joined by special guest gal pal Connie Liebe.

The night will kick off at 9pm with a screening of the first four episodes of Rupaul's Drag Race Season 4!

We shot in a nearby playground, church and then finally a studio where we set up various white boxes including a 6ft box which I had to balance on ... scary! Here are the best shots! ..... Enjoy!

A Conversation With David Hoyle

'I'm not dressing up as a princess I'm being Beautiful''.

At the dawn of the millenium confused gay children,art kids and everything in between didn't feel so lost or strange anymore when they began tuning into late night television...The Channel? Channel 4 and the show? 'The Divine David Presents' and 'The Divine David Heals'. Finally the world of the avant garde was bombarding its way onto television.

Before The Mighty Boosh and other such acid trip like shows,there was the Divine David and his utterly brilliant,bizzare and strange shows filled with advice,trips to the seaside and of course,masterclasses....and no show has since come close to capturing the pure madness of it all.

In 2005 David returned to the public eye under his given name,'David Hoyle',a move he said was 'scary and brave'.A statement anyone with a stagename can understand as without a character or name to hind behind,who do you blame your antics on? After appearing in 'Nathan Barley', Hoyle began to grace the stage once again in a successfull run of various shows (more recently in his Winter Warmer series) and in 2010 he directed and starred in the critically acclaimed 'Uncle David'.

On Feburary 23rd David Hoyle will be appearing to masses of starry eyed queens and inbetweens at The Sugar Club,Dublin. Ahead of this I planned on interviewing David and instead the two of us had an intimate conversation about,well,everything.

On bullying ...

Almost every member of the LGBT community has been bullied at one time or another. Although bulling and harresment is still a huge problem today, there are usually people there help and stop it.Back in the 70's things were quite different,and very scary. ''I remember being bullied on a daily basis,and it was like the teachers didn't see anything wrong with it.I was gay and it was like I should of expected to be bullied,they laughed it off'.

A day or two before speaking to David,another drag performer and I were attacked outside a club in Dublin,an experience that not only left me physically hurt but also quite fearful. This experience also hit close to home for David who was attacked on different occasions. 'I had finished a show in Sydney Opera House and myself and a friend were attacked,then fled and hid in a park.Terrifying'.

Just before the world celebrated the millienium David was attacked back home in the UK.'I had my head kicked in by a gang of guys and nobody stopped to help. I left and went to New York with a group of friends just to escape it. Everyone was celebrating new year and I had this. This is was eventually led to me leaving the public eye for six years'.

''I still find it hard everyday. Sometimes I don't leave the house for days. I love doing shows,meeting new people but at home I can find it quite hard to do daily things like cleaning or motivating myself. This is why I surround myself by positive people who have helped me, like Dawn Harvey, who has put many of my shows together''

''I have a very private life, I never wanted to be famous,it was never a goal,that doesn't interest me'.

On the goverment ...

The topic of bullying and attacks led both of us to question what exactly is going on and why such things even happen,'I promote love and peace and yet I'm attacked'. 'Were living in uncertain times and society lives in fear...and the goverment wants this'. 'Violence and war are being promoted constantly, at the Royal Wedding Prince William wore a red (colour of human blood) miliatry uniform with badges,promoting war. Kate didn't exactly wear a dress made out of the gay flag now did she?'.

From speaking to Hoyle I could tell he was extremley interested in politics and the idea of him giving a speech outside parliment would'nt be so out of the question,'I see myself as a spiritual communist.I've always been interested in politics and the goverment.I have always watched Tony Ben and found him fascinating'.

On Men & Relationships ...

'I remember my first gay experience was when I was five years old. There was a rocking horse in my classroom and another boy was riding it. I sat behind him rocking back and forth and was screamed at by the teacher to get off'.

Something that we both agreed on was the idea of a one night stand is very uneapealling,'Each to their own,people can do what they like.I just need to trust and love the person,and this can take quite a while. Boys can be very cruel,once they know what you want they can do what they like'.

On the LGBT scene ...

''Its so important to have somewhere to feel like you belong. Were like a family''.

''What I don't get is the gay men who are 'straight acting' and are almost embaressed with the gay scene. They can be quite aggressive about being associated with it. You know like 'I don't care if you walked in gay pride or gave a speech,how was that for me?''. A sad but true fact. We both noted the fact that more and more people forget about Why we have events like Gay Pride and rallies and speeches. 'We have them because they are needed.Needed to remind people what we have gone through,fought for and are still fighting for'.

On Gender ...

''Growing up I never identified as male or female.I felt strange and different. I remember we had a dress up box in our classroom and I was putting on a princess outfit and all the children were shouting about me putting it on...and I shouted out 'I'm not dressing up as a princess I'm being Beautiful''.

'Society is so focused on Male and Female and its like your almost rewarded for being uber macsculine and feminine.'

As we continued to speak about topics such as trash drag and how the alternative really needs to return to the drag scene (Hoyle presented the Alternative Miss Liverpool last November and Alternative Miss Ireland comes to a close this year).We left the conversation with well wishes and an excitment about Hoyles show in The Sugar Club,Dublin (support from VEDA and PANTI). For anyone really wondering what the avante gard is ,you need to be in attendance for what will be a fantastic show.

With everyone gearing up for round 2 of Rupaul's Drag Race Tonight I spoke to the stunning Alisa Summers about her stint and thoughts on the show, her drag beginnings and her ambitions for the rest of the year.

1 - Alisa, Condraguations on making the show....the first episode just aired,what was it like watching it all back?

So crazy. The entire experience was so surreal. To see myself on my favorite tv show--there are no words!

2 - It always sucks for the first girl to go, does that just make you more determined to really go for it?

Oh, absolutely! I am very driven and I saw how my lip sync looked on tv. I'm a high-energy girl, so I can't wait to see my fans on tour and show them what Alisa is about!

3 - The show is a huge platform for queens and previous girls have all done very well for themselves, what are you goals now?

I want to do everything! I want to make music, I want to travel, I want to do more tv work. I loved being on the show and I know that's the business I want to be in.

4 - Before drag race you have done extremley well for yourself,winning a lot of pageants. Would you consider yourself a pageant queen?

I love pageants. Forcing myself into pageants really helped me amp up my personal drag style. I don't consider myself a pageant queen though, I consider myself a show queen!

5 - Your a regular performer in the Tama Bay area, is this where you first started?

Yes! I have been in Tampa for my entire drag career. I love it here. The drag scene (and the gay scene) is absolutely thriving here!

6 - At the premier for drag race Rupaul said that you group of girls are the first generation of drag queens who have evolved while watching the show. Was this the case with you?

Completely. I am a huge fan of the show. There is a pattern that goes along with the show, and I watched as much of it as I could before we began filming.

7 - Watching season four now who do you think will excel amongst the group?

I am now rooting for Phi Phi, because we have similar drag styles, and also for Latrice because she has been my sister for years!

8 - Do you feel like your character fully came across on the show or do you wish you did more?Perhaps you could pull a Shangela next year!

I do wish America could have seen more of Alisa. I have lovely things and have a lot in me to give. I would absolutely love to be on next season ;)

9 - What and who are your main inspirations for Alisa Summers?

When I started, I styled myself off of my favorite pop stars of the time (Pink, Janet, etc.). Now, I draw inspiration from everywhere and everyone. I love to grow and learn in the business.

10 - Your going to be a busssy drag queen this year ... what have you lined up for next few months and where can people hear from you?

With a new show,'Boy In A Dress' ready to open in two weeks, I spoke to the fantastic performance artist La JohnJospeh about his life,work and new shows.

1 - So your quite busy at the moment preparing for your new show, tell me about that ...

It's called "Boy in a Dress" and it's a two-hour collage of my three memoir shows, it's unusual because it's a solo show played by two people, myself and Ann Lewenhaupt.

It takes stories from my childhood on the council estates of Liverpool, the strip clubs of New York, ad the streets of Berlin, and strings them together with humor, pathos and reworkings of my favourite songs.

2 - What can people expect from the new show?

To be entertained and challenged in equal measure, I hope. I am giving them the opportunity to take a look into a very personal, quite deranged world, and to see things from an unexpected point of view.

3 - How would you describe your shows and how would you begin to class and describe yourself as a performer?

I think New York magazine put It best, "Like Cindy Sherman dressing as David Bowie dressing as Cindy Sherman."

4 - You have stated before that as a child you wanted to be a priest(!) ... quite a shocking statement I must say. Where did that dream end and when did you spark an interest to perform?

I fell out of love with the idea of being a priest in my late teens, and didn't find performing until my early twenties. In between I was in fashion, which was by far the least interesting segue between the two I can imagine. I actually was never attracted to the performative aspects of the priesthood but rather by the solitude it offered.

5 - Growing up were you always creative and outgoing?

No, I was very shy, I still am. I found it very hard to talk people until I knew them well, and had almost no friends at all as a result. I was very insular and read a lot.

6 - One of the reasons I am strongly attracted to your work is the subject of Gender Identity. What is it about this topic that interests you?

It's one of the most prominent discussions in my life , so naturally it comes out vividly in my work too. I feel that my performances are a manifesto of my gender, for my own sake, as much as they are an explanation to the audience.

7 - Most of your work and looks are still,to a degree,considered taboo...do you feel like there are enough artists out there tackling the issues you do?

No, but that's what makes it interesting. Artists talk about sex and sexuality of course, but their intersection with other issues, such as class and religion is not exactly fashionable. My friend Stevie Hanley is a painter who investigates these things in a convergent manner, which is I think why I am so drawn to his work.

8 - Who and want inspires you and your work?

Penny Arcade, Angela Davis, the horrendous state of the society we live in and the belief that We can change it.

9 - You currently live in Berlin,one of my favourite cities, what is it about Berlin that you are attracted to?

I moved to Berlin in a whim, just as I over to New York. It just seemed like the obvious move, and I haven't regretted it, yet!

Rupaul's Drag Race Season 4 premiered on Monday and the first challenge was to design a runway look inspired by the end of the world. From the get go Sharon Needles stole the show...and the challenge. Looking forward to seeing her progress.

Sharon Needles : Challenge winner and fantastic runway performance complete with blood pouring out of her mouth.

Kenya Michaels : From the ashes a phoenix rises. The wings were epic.

'The Princess' : Her outfit had a strong nautical theme, the world was covered in water and she jumped ship. Although not a judges favourite,I loved this one.

I recently came across the work of uber talented fashion photographer Thom Kerr...

Based in Australia, Kerr is making waves in the fashion industry across the world and his original and fascinating style of photography drew me in straight away. This week I was lucky enough to interview the man himself...

'Self Portrait'

1 - Growing up in AU what and who inspired you?

I was born in a city called the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. Do you remember the Australian film Muriel's wedding? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7B01BMl_k4) (Its at this point I grew to love Kerr even more as Muriel's Wedding is one of my all time favourite fims). Muriel comes from a town called Porpoise Spit - that's what growing up in my suburb on the Gold Coast felt like. I was pretty unpopular at school so often I would imagine all sorts of adventures in order to escape reality.

I loved my video games and pop music, religiously listening to the top 30 on the radio all the time and imagining myself as a superstar. In grade two, my madonna obsession led me to enter the school talent quest with an impromptu dance to Vogue... it went down disastrously and I didn't live it down for a long time. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wasn't exactly inspired by my surroundings. Most of my ideas came from the characters and family that surrounded me, plus a little intuitive magic from up above.

2 - You graduated with a fine art degree in film, do you think the fine art aspect helped your thought process in creating concepts for shoots?

I'm definitely one of those annoying photographers that likes to set a character, a style, a point in time... even if it's an abstract mixture of those elements, everything needs to exist for a reason and have a sense of purpose. Film is very visual, it lends itself more to story telling and I think that story telling makes for great photography. I wasn't exposed to photographers growing up, but I always knew I was attracted to colourful visuals - perhaps where my obsession with music videos was born.

When I started taking pictures, I was coming from a very different place of creation. In the beginning, it was more about raw creativity as opposed to capturing photos that referenced my favourite imagery. And I think going to film school and directing really helped to cultivate that creative process as opposed to becoming obsessed with technicals, which I find is the great kill joy of most up and coming photographers.

3 - You also worked in production design and wardrobe before starting your photography, was this an intentional choice so you could understand the setting up of a shoot or was fashion just another interest?

It happened quite organically. At university whilst studying film I was a bit of a social butterfly and met a lot of interesting characters with varying talents. Models, photographers, designers etc. I've always been a can do kinda guy so I started producing these creative shoots building sets, styling looks, writing articles - I wasn't taking photos at this stage. One of them started a label, and through her I became interested in the process of how an image comes to life.

I'd done dance when I was younger so I always had an interest in costume, and I think fashion was a natural extension of that. Eventually I kept feeling like the final photos from these shoots were not as good as I pictured in my head, but I was afraid to take the leap into the role of photographer. By this stage I was two thirds of the way through my degree, and I was afraid of being a jack of all trades and a master of none. After a heavy break up I had a chance encounter with a psychic who told me I was going to end up a famous photographer. That gave me enough courage to go and buy a camera and I guess you say the rest is history...

4 - How did you get involved in photography and how did you begin to get your name out there?

I think in the beginning it takes a lot of determination and a never say die attitude. I sent out lots of emails, contacted modelling agencies, scouted for locations... anything to make it work. I interned at Black magazine (http://blacklognz.blogspot.com/) where I saw for the first time how the industry worked.

I got a taste for it and started applying the principals I'd learnt from what I witnessed and began developing my portfolio. At first it was difficult hearing conflicting opinions about your work because as an artist you're always sensitive to how people interpret your pictures.

It's also difficult marrying what is aesthetically pleasing with a conceptual idea. Testing models constantly helped me to learn what works and what doesn't on a basic level. I felt like once I learnt the rules of fashion and how to make things look beautiful, I then gave myself permission to break them. It was amazing how the fantasy direction polarised my audience in the beginning - but I found a much deeper connection with the people who appreciated my work. The digital world has really embraced my style and introduced my work to it's intended audience.

It's my seventh year as a photographer now so things keep getting more exciting and I'm extremely grateful to everyone who has fuelled my creativity by showing me some love! You guys are awesome!

5 - Your work is very inspiring,a complete mix of fantasy and reality,what inspires you to create your concepts?

I think there is a certain magic that surrounds us all the time that we're unaware of. I want my pictures to take people out of their world for that split moment in time and explore another part of themselves. All the characters in my pictures are all on their own journeys, having an emotional experience, and although they are all fantastical I think they also reflect elements within ourselves that long to be explored. The hero, the lover, the warrior, the entertainer, the dreamer, the supermodel, the performer... The goal is that people can look at my images and dream bigger and brighter about their own internal world! I'm interested in fashion photography as artistic expression, not elitism.

6 - You have exhibited your world all over the world, a great feat for someone so young, is there anywhere in particular that you loved visiting and is there somewhere you still want to visit?

Would you believe I've been to Japan, Malaysia, New Caledonia, The United States, Venezuela, Bali, New Zealand and the Caribbean but still have never made it to Europe! Often I have moments of jealousy in regards to my pictures because they've seen more of the world than I have! I always love hearing tales of my pictures popping up in various cities around the world - my model mates will usually take a snap for me. Usually I can walk into any agency now and find either someone I've worked with or one of my pictures on someone's card.

At times it's hard to grasp... I've been gagging to get to London for quite some time now because not only do I have friends there, but some of my loveliest messages come from the English kids! You guys rule! I'm constantly getting intern requests from students in Greece, Germany, Sweden etc and a little while ago I got an email from a Jamaican model whose agency told her to shoot with me in New York. I couldn't believe that an agency in Jamaica knew of my work! Blows my mind...

Things in the last year have really taken off and eventually I have to present my book in Paris and London. I'm just playing it patient so that when the time comes my portfolio is looking immaculate with a clear artistic opinion!

7 - What advice would you give to young artists and photographers who really want to make a mark in the industry?

Find your own voice. Referencing in the beginning helps you get familiar with how to shoot but it often becomes a dangerous game where you begin to lose grip on your original passion. Remember, it's far better to have people love or hate your work then to be forgotten about within the turn of a page! You have to be willing to pour all of your money into your personal projects and dream big! You won't find validation from other people in the beginning, so you've got to believe in yourself!

8 - What are your plans for the new year? Where can people hear more of you and your upcoming shows and work?

I've just filmed shooting a fashion film for the super talented Australian designer Elliot Ward-Fear (http://www.elliotwardfear.com/). It's my first ever fashion film and marks my return into direction again, which is really exciting for me. I'm also working with my favourite young designers and shooting advertising for some great established brands down under. Keep your eyes peeled... I'll be hiding underneath your coffee table and inside your computer!

With Rupaul's Drag Race Season Four Premiering on Monday I caught up with one of the most original contestants in the shows history. Tammie Brown first appeared in Season 1 and stood out for her quirky and original act. She later appeared in Season 1 of Rupaul's Drag U and has gone on to release an album and perform all over America.

1 - Your style of drag is very your own, there is an evident influence of old hollywood glamour mixed with comedic drag. Who and what has inspred your look and act over the years?

Tina Turner and Josephine Baker and the old Hollywood look just came along when I took my makeup classes back in college.

2 - Growing up were you a creative kid? Where you always attracted to dressing up and portraying different characters?

Yes, I loved art and excelled in art classes, and I often got kicked out of class for being a class clown! And I remember when I was a kid for Halloween I always wanted to be a witch.

3 - When did you first discover the world of drag and when did you first perform?

My first drag troop I saw was the Pink Leg Girls I was about 12 years old and then also I would see the drag queens on talk shows and I was ecstatic. And I first started performing in high school in the talent shows and plays.

4 - Looking back, how would you say your style and act has evolved since your debut show?

Now I have my own music for one, I make most of my own wigs, have been able to be photographed by some of the most talented photographers and have been given designer dresses. I am so grateful.

5 – You came to worldwide fame after starring in Rupaul's Drag Race Rupaul's Drag U. How do you feel about these experiences now?

I like having the fan'z and all the new friends around the globe and it’s also encouraging that I am able to touch and encourage so many people’s lives by doing what truly makes me happy. What a dream! And it can happen to you!

6 - You released an album,'Popcorn' on Itunes and have since released a few music videos . Your sound is very different to the typical drag music route. What inspired the album and sound?

My music is inspired by my friends and the time and the people, places and things...whatever...I have a new song and video coming out "Love Pinata" Its a dance number. Can't wait for you all to see it!

7 - Have you more plans for new music and do you always sing live or do you like to mix it with the lip synching as well?

I am working on a live stage show with Kelly Mantle, please google her. And more new songs in Spanish for the Latin market. You can also see my annual "Holiday Sparkle" Concert, which the video is on YouTube.

8 - You have probably seen the new girls on Drag Race, they really seem to be pushing the androgynous look this year. What do you make of the new line up?

I love Sharron Needles, she's the best! A real zipper! I have known Chad Michaels for many a years now, she"ll bring it on! And cheers to the rest of the girls! Ride that rainbow!

9 - What are your plans and goals for the new year?

Well, for the New Year, as I mentioned, I am working on all new music videos and I'm working on a gallery show I am putting together with Dusti Cunningham of my photos over the past 7 years and featured artists.

These are some of the latest looks I have put together for Candy Warhol. I created two of the jumpsuits (with help from friend Katie Flynn thank you!) out of a web material with sequins. The first was a dark clown look complete with ruffled collar and pointed cone hat. The second was a pink shorter version with black organza capes. I will be shooting them properly with more outfits next week for a shoot. I also added in two videos so you can see how the they looked when the light hit them! They were shot at Space'N'Veda in The George,Dublin.

Drew Droege (Chloe) Interview

Drew Droege is a successful actor who in the last few years has become a major online phenomenon thanks to his character 'Chloe' (based on It girl Chloe Sevigny). This year he was picked as one of OUT Magazine's OUT 100 and has a series of films and shows lined up.

1 - Growing up, were you always acting and playing different characters ?

As a kid, our dad would play all of these different characters around the house. Wigs, crazy glasses, horrible accents - all normal in the Droege household. I started doing community theatre when I was in high school in North Carolina.

2 - You said before that you wanted to be a serious actor but you have become a major comedic talent, was the foray into comedy intentional?

Not at all! I tried to do lots of drama when I was younger, and I always got laughs - I used to get so upset about it. And then I realized that I should do comedy - it's easier for me. I still don't consider myself a comedian, as much as an actor who does comedy. I want to be honest and real - that's more challenging and interesting to me.

3 - Your best known for your Chloe character, what was it about Chloe that made you begin parodying her?

Another happy accident. Several years ago, I looked in the mirror and realized that I looked like her. Then I read an interview with her, and she was referencing all of these insane, bizarre people and labels. I find her to be both fascinating and a little bit ridiculous - she's so much cooler than I am!

4 - At this stage the Chloe character seems to have taken on a life of its own, do you have any more plans for her?

I don't really know what's next for my Chloe. I'd love to do a video with the real Chloe. I love playing her and living in her world, so I will continue to make videos and do live appearances as long as I can.

5 - Chloe has such a strong following within the LGBT community and you were chosen as one of Out's Out100 , why do you think this is? Besides the fact that were a cruel bunch.

I never intended for my Chloe character to reach such heights - it was just something I did at comedy shows that sometimes went well and often times just confused people. So, I'm so touched that people like her so much. I think I have success with her because I like her - she's fun to play - I'm not judging or hating on Chloe Sevigny. The real Chloe's been an icon in the gay community for years - she makes great, indie queer films, she loves to play around with gender, she's a fashion maven... so put a man in that dress, and bang! I was so honored to be in Out this year -that kind of took my breath away.

6 - Chloe mentions some of the strangest labels around ... do you have a love of fashion yourself? or just a love for finding strange things?

I love words and specific information. I also find people's need to name-drop to be hilarious. I don't really know much about fashion. But I love people who talk about "important clothing" and "relevant food" and "admirable celebrity" - what the fuck does any of that mean? haha.

7 - Do you have any other characters or plans to create more?

Yeah, I do lots of characters on my podcast, Glitter In The Garbage, every week. I also do impressions of Tanya Roberts, Karen Black, Jeremy Irons, and lots of original characters. I'm working on several different things right now - my interest is more in playing real people who look and sound like me, yet have a totally different point of view.

8 - What are your plans for the rest of the year and where can we see more of your work?

Well, the holidays are in our laps, so I'm mainly eating and drinking deliciously awful things right now. You can follow me on twitter and facebook - I always put my new vids up there. I have some movies coming out next year- "Freak Dance", "Sassy Pants", and I'm in the new "Eating Out" movie ("Drama Camp", which you can get on DVD right now).

This Summer I was trawling the web and I discovered a track that made me excited,laugh and share with my partner who,it just plain confused. The song was 'Trannies Are Fierce (And They Carry Big Guns)' and the damsel behind the track was non other than Alaska Thunderfuck. The American queen with the big platinum hair,big outfits and lots to say.
So I decided I had to interview her! . . .

1 ) With a name like Alaska Thunderfuck its safe to say that from the get go your no ordinary queen. How would you describe yourself?

It's true-- I am no ordinary queen. I'm from outer space, I have supernatural magic powers, and I also have the thickest, longest, fullest natural blonde hair of anyone on this planet Earth. That being said, at the end of the day, I'm really just a simple girl who enjoys what all drag queens enjoy: drugs, drinking, and Misty Slim 120s.

2 ) I love a queen that likes to set outside of the tranny box, and your style is great, what inspires the Alaska look?

People tell me I look just like the love child of Divine and Britney Spears-- and I agree with them! I'm inspired by marijuana, beauty, glamour, magic, and beauty. The key to staying so slim and gorgeous is having regular bowel movements 2 to 3 times per day.

3 ) Growing up were you always attracted to playing different characters and experimenting with looks?

When I was young I would dress up in my grandmother's tennis dresses and fur hats and model in the living room, and my father would call me Justina. After years of therapy and fits of deep psychosis I feel I've come out on top-- and fortunately the tennis dresses still fit!

4 ) Your responsible for the brilliant 'Trannies Are Fierce' (which I will link here for download) tell me a little about the track and are you interested in making more songs ?

I wrote "Trannies are Fierce (and They Carry Big Guns)" when I was living in Los Angeles, and I've since written dozens, maybe even hundreds of songs. Being made and produced on my own Dell Laptop, however, most of them are so un-listenable that they've never seen the light of day. But maybe one day, such hits as "I Don't Know What is What, But I Want to Eat His Butt," "One, Two, Three Dicks is Not Enough For Me," and "AIDS (Angel In Devil's Shoes)" just might see the light of day!

5 ) As a performer and artist what and who inspires your performances ?

When I first went to a drag show when I was 18 years old, I thought the queens were gorgeous-- and by gorgeous I mean not that gorgeous. But I was mortified that they weren't singing their own songs or lyrics. "What is LIP-SYNCING?!" I cried, drowning my shock and sorrow in Long Island iced tea. While I still haven't figured out just what lip-syncing is, I've become insistent upon singing live whenever possible. And if the venue doesn't have a working microphone available, I simply shout at the audience until they hand me dollar bills.

6 ) I know you work closely with Sharon Needles, are their any other performers whom you admire and why?

I'm fortunate to be a part of the finest drag house the world over, "The Haus of Haunt." I'm perpetually inspired by such thrilling house monsters as Veruca la'Piranha, Cherri Baum, Amy Vodkahaus, and of course Sharon Needles. These ghouls keep me spooked, and we all have faces worthy of haunting a house.

7 ) You have spoken many times about auditioning for Rupaul's Drag Race and their are rumours that this could be your year ... any comment on this?

At present I have been relegated to the position of the Susan Lucci of Drag Race-- always a bridesmaid, never a bride as the Bible says. But my aims are constant and my resolve is unwavering. I'm sure by season 18 I'll be on Drag Race-- I have no doubt!

8 ) Do you think that 'Drag Race' is lacking any types of queens and if so do you think you could bring something different?

I'm shocked that no one on the show has a full head of naturally platinum blonde hair like I do. Why must they all wear wigs?! WHY?!

9 ) What is the drag scene like in your hometown and was it easy or difficult to make a mark there?

My hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania has a burgeoning drag scene but I have yet to make a mark there. Maybe next Thanksgiving I'll do a show and give them all a little thrill...

10 ) What are your plans for the rest of the year and what will Christmas be like at the Thunderfuck household?

Christmas Eve is a time when we look at the Christmas lights, and talk about the day tomorrow. I'll put the twins down shortly thereafter, but I've given up on trying to get Sharon to go to bed early on Christmas Eve-- she's too excited! We receive many gifts from fans all around the world, and it wouldn't be fair to give them away to charities. But Sharon's gifts from Santa she doesn't get to open all at once. She can open only one-- the rest she has to earn throughout the year by staying on her good behavior.

In 2009 Britt Love appeared as one half of the amazing Mini Viva. Their debut single 'Left My Heart In Tokyo' was a Top 10 hit and the next two singles 'I Wish' and 'One Touch' scored music critic praise and were nominated for Popjustice's £20 prize.

When the duo parted ways Britt Love continued writing,recording,performing and in September featured on Monacrhy's single 'You Don't Want To Dance With Me'. Veda became Miss Alternative Ireland in 1999 and In 2002 she created the indie group 'Daddy's Little Princess'. In 2006 'LadyFace' was born, a partnership with Davina Devine.

In 2009 she released her debut album 'Stars Edge' which crashed into the Itunes top 10 and peaked at no.2 in Tower Records charts where it held its position for five weeks. Singles like 'Miss You Much (Just A Tad)' and 'Dyno Rod Man' showcase Veda's dark haunting vocals and clever and honest lyrics.

Austin Young Interview

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of my favourite visual artists, Austin Young. I have shown his work on Gutter Candy before and was very excited about getting to chat to the man behind such great work.

1 - Looking at your work its obvious you are attracted to 'The Other', the strange, the different. Why do you think this is?

I did not 'fit in' when I was a kid. I remember one day deciding that if people were going to call me a freak, I might as well be one. I only felt comfortable with 'The Other.'

2 - Growing up what where you interests,what inspired you?

Andy Warhol . Interview Magazine. The Wizard of Oz. Marilyn Monroe. MTV. Diana Ross. Off The Wall by Michael Jackson . Stevie Wonder. Snow Skiing. Tennis. The Preppy Handbook. When B52's came out with Rock Lobster and it was a radio hit. it blew my mind. Punk Rock. there were a handful in Reno. There was an all girl band called The Wrecks who went to my high school. we would go see 7seconds, another local band. I became more interested in New Wave.

3 - Your photography and films are quite beautiful and your style is very 'Austin Young',its your own. Did it take you long to hone in on a personal style?

I feel it's something I'm always working on. I'm always trying to figure it out or make it better. My early work looks very similar to how it does now: simple portraits. I was living in New York when i started taking tons of portraits. i had been obsessed with Hollywood Glamor photography and 40's and 50's fashion photography when i was a kid. I read an interview with George Hurrell where he said he would use one light with an umbrella. and so that's what i did. I searched for ways to light people that would create the illusion of perfect skin. I also would collage the images and put them on different backgrounds. I had a darkroom in my storefront on Ludlow street in NYC. I'd spend all my time there searching for new ways to alter the images. I would bleach them and dye them.

4 - Where did you grow up and what were you like as a child/teen?

I grew up in Reno, Nevada. my family were ranchers and engineers. Italian and English immigrants who had been in the area for generations. Some had come over from with the first pioneers in the mid 1800's. I feel very connected to my history there. I was terribly shy. and by the time i was a teen, a complete outcast. I was made fun of and called all sorts of things… 'Fag' 'Faggot' 'Queer' 'homo' etc. My Junior high and high school was not a safe space for me- it was pretty terrible. As an escape, I really entered into the world of pop-culture. I knew i wanted to create it. i wanted to work with Interview Magazine. Siouxsie Sioux. Debbie Harry. and the weird thing is…. it happened.

5 - Drag Queens and crossdressers seem to be a big part of your work,Were you involved in the drag scene in anyway growing up or was this something you discovered through art?

There was not a drag scene in Reno that I knew about. It was very conservative small town with conservative values. It was still partially a cowboy town. I was a big fan of Boy George. and Leigh Bowery. I wanted to be like them. I was obsessed with how they had reinvented themselves and had become a completely fabulous fantasy characters. I loved John Waters and Divine. These people expressed themselves how they felt- now how society felt they should be. I'm sure this was a reaction against societies gender roles- in some cases a 'fuck you.' I think the way society views gender will become more fluid in the near future and that we will find a space where we celebrate who we are and not who we are supposed to be.

6 - Is there a paticular 'type' of model or subject you seek out to shoot or do you find it is subjects are inspired by you and seek you out?

Mostly, I consider my work to be 'Portraiture' . Currently, geographically, a lot of the people I photograph are part of the LA scene or they are some kind of celebrity. In my last gallery show, 'YOUR FACE HERE- by Austin Young' i opened up the show to blank spaces on the walls marked by tape. Anyone who came could purchase an empty space and ruing the run of the show, my portrait studio was the gallery and by the end, all the spaces were filled. I'm open to being approached by models. I love androgenes and queens. I like to photograph all types of people.

7 - When working with your model is something you set out to capture on camera,besides the photography itself,a lot of your work seems to catch the esscene of the subject,is that intentional?

I consider my work to be mainly emotional. It is an emotional connection to the subject. I'm really trying to get into someone's head. the rest is surface and style.

8 - Is there anyone or anything in particular right now that is inspiring you and your work?

I'm still inspired by New Wave. and particularly New Wave/punk in Los Angeles around 1980. Hollywood Glamour from the 30's and 40's. Realism in films from the 70's. Andy Warhol. The current Los Angeles art scene. I get inspired by my friends and performances. Leigh Bowery. Squeaky Blonde and Fade-Dra are two artists I work with another current project, 'TRANIMAL' Tranimal is based on and the monster/muppet/glamour that Squeaky and Fade-Dra wear out in LA.

9 - Is there any location in the world or anyone that you would really like to shoot in the future?
I would like to go almost everywhere! ! I've never been to Ireland. Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. China. Australia. Cuba. Russia. I'm particularly interested in Mexico.

10 - What are you working on right now and where can people see more of your work?
I'm finishing up the final episode of 'THE WORM' you can find most of this series on my youtube channel: AUSTINYOUNGFOREVER It's going to show at a gallery in Beverly Hills opening 11-11-11. I'm part of the art collective, Fallen Fruit : http://fallenfruit.org/ TRANIMAL is going to go on tour with Machine Project Gallery- first stop- Kansas. I'm working on a book of my photographs. I'm considering making it a downloadable book on Itunes. I would love to get it published in large format.

Le Disko Bloodabath! 2011

The last two weeks I have been busy putting together the latest Gutter Candy event! 'Le Disko Bloodbath!' is the latest event and will take place on the 29th of September at Dolan's Warehouse Limerick! This is the fourth Bloodbath in the last two years and is set to be the biggest so far! The show will be headlined by the fantastic Veda, Ireland's top queen with a top ten album under her belt and a stunning set prepared for everyone.

The show will be opened by the beautiful Vonna Nolan and her beautiful boys that make up 'Return To Sender'. Limerick top rock/pop bands will be playing a live set and its going to be a great way to start off the night!

My alter ego Candy Warhol will host the show along with Dublin's faux queen Tallulah Boom Boom! We will also perform a number or two for the crowd! Another Dublin queen, Blaithnead McGee, who is a resident in Panti Bar, will be performing on the night!

More live music will come from Skinni Colin, infamous for his antics of stage,the crowd loved him last year so we thought we would let him out of the cage! One of my favourite club kid queens, Dorian Gaye will be playing a mix of Electro/Pop/80's & Dubstep on the night as well as performing a bat shit crazy number for everyone!

We just added the UL Dance Society to the lineup, the girls will be performing along with Limerick's Connie Liebe and I'm looking forward to what they come up with!

We have a few more surprises on the night! Tickets are only 8euro or 5euro if your a student! Bargain!

My alter ego Candy Warhol is the new hostess of a fantastic new night in Cork called 'Play Saturdays'. This takes place every Saturday in Cubins and is all about bringing something strange and fresh to Cork! Lots of electro and dance music fused with strange and wonderful performers. On the opening night we had gal pal Victoria Secret from Dublin perform and it was so much fun!

Victoria wore some wonderful creations that were custom made by Fionnuala Bourke (Interview with her in the interview section!!)

Victoria and I performed and the crowd danced away while Kate B played on the decks. Over the coming weeks we have some fantastic performers including VEDA who will play next Saturday! If your in Cork come say hello!

I recently did a photoshoot as my drag alter ego Candy Warhol. I had been performing Donna Summer's 'Macarthur's Park' earlier in the evening so decided to bring some cake to the shoot in Limerick. The results were an acid alice like experience. I shot with Mac Attack and then did the effects myself. Some more pictures tomorrow.

The Rio Girls 'Scissors'

I previously interviewed the fantastic band 'The Rio Girls', who are made up of three well known German models turned photographers and stylists who began a music project on the side. Their first single 'Neon Lights' was an internet craze and their new single 'Scissors' is fantastic. The beautiful video was shot in Greece and is very different from the first video,as is the single. The music is still 80's inspired electro but it took me a few listens to get used to it and I now love it. Check out the video below!

Candy Warhol For David Norris

This week my alter ego Candy Warhol appeared in Limerick for David Norris's Fundraiser. I opened the show performing 'Scheibe' from Lady Gaga and then modelled with drag sister Gigi Dauphine (below).

My first outfit was created entirley from old school sweet wrappers that I had been collecting. Very kitsch and strange!

The next outfit I wore was a broken down jacket inspired by Harajuku Girls on acid.

'Hair'

This was my favourite outfit. Its a tester from my upcoming debut collection. Created from hair, jersey and streams of video cassette material. I walked and then puked streams of more cassette tape then threw it into the wind machine - If only I had a wind tunnell at all times!

Real life twin sisters Charlotte and Stephanie began touring with Duffy and are now stepping into the spotlight as 'The Cosmic Girls' with a pop electro sound, fashion forward image ... Check out the interview with the girls below!

1 - Your new single 'The One' is fantastic and has a really strong sound, where does the inspiration for your lyrics and sound come from?

We draw on our own experiences for lyric ideas. Our songs can sometimes start with lyrics, other times we write on piano first and then arrange the music using synths. Or, sometimes it could be a synth hook that we come up with that could be the leading force in a songs development.

We like experimenting with our voices and using vocal harmonies, as well as trying out new ideas for beats and chord changes.

2 - Growing up, were the two of you always musically inclined and how did you both end up working together?

Yes, our first love has always been music and we knew from a very early age it was what we wanted to do. We learnt recorder at school and went onto learn clarinet and piano (and lots of other instruments in between). We would listen to the radio and sing songs over and over again until we knew the lyrics and we used to experiment with the melodies and make up our own vocal harmonies to the tracks and wonder why they weren’t in there in the first place. It was a natural progression for us to move onto writing our own music.

3 - How did you girls end up working with Duffy and what was it like touring with her?

We met Duffy in a restaurant in Newcastle. We always carried our demo with us, which we gave to her. We then got a call from her management a few days later and we were soon in London rehearsing.

Touring was a brilliant experience – meeting amazing musicians, seeing countries we had never been to and performing at amazing venues. The big highlights were Japan, the Australian V Festivals, Sydney Opera House and performing on Jools Holland and Top of The Pops – something we had dreamt of doing every Friday night when it used to be on TV.

4 - Was making your own music always the plan and how did you take the leap from supporting a singer to stepping into the spotlight?

Yes, we always envisaged making our own music and we were writing and recording before touring with Duffy. Backing singing was an amazing experience which opened us up to a whole new world. It proved to us that we can do it! It gave us that extra push if you like.

5 - Your style is brilliant and very quirk, what does the inspiration for your looks come from and do you style yourselves?

We love the quirkiness of Alison Goldfrapp, Roisin Murphy and Sia, as well as the glamour of Kylie. We style ourselves and we have also borrowed outfits from Northumbria University graduates, who are fantastic designers. We have worked with Sally, who is soon to launch her label, Wreakreation. Sally has designed and made amazing garments for our live shows.

6 - What are your favourite designers / places to shop for looks?

We take ideas and influences from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto, Hussein Chalayan and Craig Lawrence. And high street shops such as All Saints, Reiss and Whistles.

It’s hard to survive on a tight budget when you love fashion as much as we do!

7 - Have you girls shot a video for the new single yet and if so what can you tell me about it?

We have! Some of the video was shot in a wood, it was absolutely freezing! We didn’t realise at the time what the wood was best known for, but we do now… let’s just say a few cars were pulled up in the carpark and things were taking place that people could watch if they wanted to!

The second day of filming was done in a disused photo studio. The whole thing was done on a zero budget and was shot by Bright Eyes Media. We borrowed some gorgeous outfits by Rebecca Taylor and wore jewels on our faces.

8 - Will there be a Cosmic Girls album? And what will the sound and songs be like?

Yes of course, there will be many albums!! It will sound huge and will slap you right in the face (in a good way!).

9 - In today's music world there are more girl acts than ever and more and more pop songs by the day, do you girls have a plan of action to stand out from the rest?

We write our own songs and hope our style will set us apart. We have been told that we have really good chemistry on stage; maybe that’s the twin connection. We definitely do not see us as a girl group and there aren’t many female duo fronted bands. We work with our live band to make the songs sound fantastic live and have changed some of the instruments arrangements to give it more of a live and edgy feel.

10 - As artists who are used to performing live, how important do you think it is in today's standards to sing live as opposed to using backing tracks like other mainstream artists such as Britney etc?

Britney dances a lot, so we can kind of understand why she needs to mime. But yes, we definitely think it is extremely important to sing live, especially being female as you seem to have to prove yourself more in order to break through onto bigger things.

11 - What artists past/present influence you both and is their anyone (acts/producers) you would like to collaborate with?

We would love to work with artists who inspire us, such as Roisin Murphy and Sia. We have recently worked with one of our dream producers which was absolutely brilliant (can't wait for you to hear those tracks!), and we would love to work with Labrinth, Liam Howe, Nervo and Paul Epworth to name just a few!

12 - What are your plans for the summer and will their be another single to follow up 'The One'?

We will be writing and recording more music. We are gradually building our live band and will be practicing with our new bassist and will be playing at some festivals!

Summer 2011 Films

While most people are excited for the big summer blockbusters such as Thor and Harry Potter I always seem to have a love for films that either slip under the radar or don't exactly make the £500million intake. There are lots of films coming out this summer that I'm looking forward to, of course I had to do the research to find out about half of them! So I complied a list in hopes of letting you know about films that I hope you get excited as I am about. Now there not all trippy indie films,in fact I left them off the list (see Kaboom) and some of them are gonna be big hits and hopefully all will be great!

First up, 'Dirty Girl' starring Juno Temple (above) and set in 1986, Temple is stuck in special ED and longing to find her father that ran out on her as a kid. She teams up with her in the closet best friend for a road trip adventure. Can't wait to see this one.No trailer yet tho! Release in August.

Now I've already seen this one this week but thought those of you who have not should check it out! Although Cameron Diaz does well in her role as the oddly strange teacher its the surrounding faculty that really deliver the laughs. Her sidekick Lynn and nemisis Mrs Squirell really did if for me while Timberlake should of just stayed at home for this one!

With talent from SNL this film looks set to be the female 'Hangover' and should provide plenty of laughs! Released at the end of this week!

A remake of the 80's classic, this looks like a clever and dark horror and also stars one of my favourite's Toni Collette.

This looks like an odd one. Another high school dramedy, this is all about teenage girls and sex and how the title character plays with men. Worth a
watch I think!

This looks like an incredibly powerful film.

I really love a good documentary and this film looks set to be one of the best this year. Quite dark and shocking! Check out the trailer!

I really was not expecting this trailer to scare me . . . After a few set backs the film is finally getting released this August.

Simple sometimes works best and it seems to here. A frendship of sorts indie comedy that looks like it will be a hit.

This looks like such a strange film! But I love a good indie comedy about complete weirdos! The stars look like their having fun while keeping straight oddball faces. If you like weird ones then check this out!

This is one of the smartest trailers I ever seen. And I can't wait to see it. Not giving anything away just watch!

Gina G Interview

You weren't a proper 90's kid or pop fan if you didn't love Gina G. Her no.1 single 'Ooh Aah Just A Little' blew up everywhere including the 1996 Eurovision. Her fantastic album 'Fresh' spawned four top 20 hits in (the UK. Gina returned a few years later and scored a massive dance hit in the UK with 'Tonight's The Night' (My personal fav) and her second album 'Get Up And Dance'. After having two children Gina is now back again with her new single 'Next 2 U' so I wasted no time in chatting to her.

1 - Gina, Congrats on the new single, its great! Where did the song come from and what’s the story behind it?

Thank you, I’m really happy with how it turned out and glad you think its great.

I originally worked on a demo version a while back. My long time co-writer John Collins and myself thought it was the right song and the right time. Billy Pace also co-wrote it with John and myself, his claim to fan, can you believe it; is Celine Dion’s biggest album “Lets Talk About Love”?

Duane Morrison produced and wrote the track as well and his claim to fame was Madison Ave’s “Don’t Call Me Baby”. It was an eclectic bunch but it all fell into place. I love it and think it’s very Gina G 2011.

2 - 'Next 2 U' is the first single since 'Tonight's The Night' in 2006, what have you been up to since and did you miss performing or welcome a break?

Straight after “Tonight’s The Night” I had my second child. That put my music on hold while I was raising my two amazing kids. I love performing but a family is a full time job. Now they are older and at schooI I can balance the two a lot better. I can’t wait to get back out there and start performing “Next 2 U” and giving back to my loyal fans.

3 - Your currently based in L.A. - Do you consider it home now?

I’ve been living in LA since 2005, so I do feel like it’s my home but I will always have a fondness for the UK. I mean that’s where it all started for me. Now finally there is an American pop explosion I feel like I’m in the right place.

4 - Your a bit of a UK sweetheart and there is a lot of support there and people that want to see you, what are your plans for promo in the UK?

As soon as we get the “Next 2 U” remixes to the Clubs & DJs, I’m sure there will be a demand for lots of live performances from me. I can’t wait!

5 - 'Next 2 U' is the current single, can you give me some little details about the video?

Actually I’m with the editor right this minute. Don’t expect “Tonight’s The Night”, or any similarities to any of my other videos. I am an independent label and it’s a self-funded release, so we have a financial budget to stick to. At this stage of the game it’s way too risky to do a J-LO budget video. Saying that, it’s very cute and fun. And I’m proud of it

6 - When it comes to your style and image, what or who inspires you?

Hollywood glamour has always inspired me and always will.

I love, love, love, Fergie. She is great singer, great performer and she’s isn’t a spring chicken. She rocks!

7 - You’re also now a brunette! Great look, why the change?

Two kids say no more. Plus it was time for a big hair change and I love it.

8 - Your first album 'Fresh!' is a pop classic while 'Get Up & Dance' is more dance and electro pop, will there be a third album or second single and what kind of sound are going for?

Definitely there will be follow ups this time. Digital has made that possible. The sound will be slamming poptastic-fantastic with a hard edge. They will get you on the dance floor that’s for sure.

9 - You’re recognized as Eurovision royalty now, what do you think of the show now and did you watch it this year?

The show was fantastic and yes I watched it. I was mind blown by the sets and production. If it had of been like that when I represented Britain I think I might have had a better chance of winning. But hey 7^th isn’t bad and it landed me at number one in the UK, so I am super happy to have been a part of it.

10 - Having been successful in the 90's and 00's, what do you think of the current pop acts and is there anyone that you like?

I love the current pop acts. I especially love, Taio Cruz, Bruno Mars and anything by Pitbull. As a Producer, I love Dr Luke; I would kill to work with him. It’s a great time for music.

11 - How are you handling being a mother now and do they understand about Gina G the popstar as opposed to Gina the mom?

They are only 3 and 7, but my boy loves anything that’s 4 on the floor and therefore loves my music. They haven’t asked for autographs just yet, ha ha. They don’t ask the question, “Why is Mummy on the TV and Radio?” They just accept it. Mummy is just mummy and I love that.

12 - What are you current plans for the rest of the summer?

Writing recording & production repeat, repeat, repeat. Maybe a two-day vacation in there.

13 - Finally, you have a strong fanbase out there, is there anything you would like to say?

I have got so much to say to my loyal, supportive and patient fans out there. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and go download the song a million times. Ha ha. Just kidding. The most important thing I want to say to my fans is that I wouldn’t be doing this right now if it weren’t for you. I love you.
